"School Lesson, 1907" Mural

This 4’ x 6’ acrylic on plywood mural depicts a "times 10" lesson in the Kennetcook Dyke School in September 1907. Teacher Ethel Withrow is giving examples of the "times 10" rule to student Mary Sanford.

On the blackboard are materials for several grades.

There is a history quiz for the grade 3 students, a science quiz for grade 4, homework assignment for grade 5, and the spellings list for grade 2.

The names of the students, Everett Dill and Aubrey Casey, assigned daily duty for the month to fetch water for the communal bucket are written on the board.

On the right hand side drawings by three grade 1 students are displayed.
  Alfred Barkhouse has drawn a picture titled "Farmer" of a man with a pitchfork in a field beside a barn.
  Freddie Dill has drawn a picture titled "Uncle Dan" of a man rowing a dory in the ocean.
  Abbie Parker has drawn a picture titled "Home" of a house with a man in the yard.

The school bell and the teacher’s inkwell are shown at her desk. A portion of one of the student double desks is also depicted.

The year 1907 was chosen as it is at the halfway point in the 1851-1963 period when the community school was located at the intersection of the Lacy Road and the Old Walton Road.
